Caralampo Focas is an experienced transport professional on smart and sustainable mobility with an established international reputation. For over 25 years he has been consulting, writing and researching into cities, transport, consumer and quality of life themes, expanding the research horizons in methodological, social, economic, comparative and policy issues.
Caralampo is currently a senior research fellow at the University of Oxford investigating transport sustainability and the future of cities.
From 2001, for three years, he was the Greek Transport Minister’s Adviser on Passenger Transport including the planning of the 2004 Olympic Games. Prior to that he was director of the Athens office of the transport consultancy, TRUTH.
Thereafter, he was appointed a Fellow in Transport Economics in at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. On his return to Greece, he became a consultant of the Greek consumer association, “The Quality of Life”, EKPIZO, directing consumer research projects. From 2010 to 2012, he was a research scientist involved in freight transport at the National Research Centre of Greece.
Caralampo held a variety of senior posts at the London Research Centre from 1988 until its abolition in 1999. There, he was responsible for numerous high-profile transport and environmental studies for London.
Caralampo is the author/editor of five books (some of which have been translated in French and Japanese) and numerous other publications on transport and quality of life issues, including: Top Towns: The Guinness Guide to finding the best places to live in the UK. He has also authored: Towards a Common European Policy for Promoting Urban Public Transport (a policy paper discussed by the European Ministers of Transport), and The World Cities Transport Study: a comparison of the transport systems of London, New York, Paris and Tokyo. Caralampo’s last published book was Transport Issues and Problems in South-Eastern Europe by Ashgate Press.
